Duro-Med Walker with 5 Inch Wheels

I just had full hip replacement surgery and have been released home with a restriction of no weight on my leg for 6 weeks. Leaving the hospital, we were equipped with a walker, crutches, etc., so that I could function at home. My problem is that I have a two story house and would have to wait for my wife to bring my walker either upstairs or down stairs for me when I wanted to change levels on the house. Nice, but a tiring proposition for her.So, I wanted a second walker and called the hospital and asked how much a second walker would be. They told me about $239 and that my insurance would NOT cover a second walker. Ok, so on to AMAZON!! I found this walker and it looked and the specs read like the one I have (which is very functional for me) and the price was a fraction of what the hospital wanted. So, I ordered one. Here is what I liked: 1. The unit is mostly assembled and only required putting the wheel sections into the unit. NO TOOLS are required to do this! Done, that is the assembly process! 2. The unit is exactly the same dimensions as the one I received from the hospital so all i had to do was duplicate the settings from my original walker and this one was completely setup! 3. Like my original, this walker folds up easily for transport. It also OPENS easily!!!! Once locked in place, it is stable and does not move around. 4. Walker easily supports my 240 pounds. 5. Adjustments in height are done using a detent button on each leg. Easy to do, height is marked on all detents, once completed, the unit is stable without any wiggles. Here is the one thing I did not like: 1. The wheels on this unit did not turn easily. It made it more of an effort to use. This was easily solved with a small crescent wrench. Back the nut off 1/4 turn and the wheels turn freely. Someone was just a bit wrench happy when they assembled the unit.I can now go up and down stairs (using crutches) and have a walker on each floor so that I am independent and do not have to ask for help!! This is a very inexpensive (my opinion) option to restore some of the mobility you lose while recovering from surgery. I would highly recommend this unit if you have the need for one.

Excellent value

This walker cost less than $40 and was delivered for free in two days - that alone was enough to earn it a five-star rating. I agree with the many previous reviewers who commented on the sturdiness, narrow width, ease of assembly and storage, etc., and would like to add just a couple of points.First, there are no assembly instructions. I suppose any idiot could figure out how to pop the leg extensions on, but I did have to refer to the listing photos to see if the wheels went on the inside or the outside, and some simple instructions would have saved me some time. I got the wheels on correctly (outside) on the first try, but after reading another reviewer's comments, I switched them to the inside. Big improvement. This not only allows the walker to be used in narrower spaces, but it also prevents the wheels from getting caught up in loose cords or under the edges of low furniture. And second, this walker came with an extra set of end caps for the rear legs. The leg extensions were equipped with thick, rubbery "cane tip" style feet for all-terrain use, and there was a separate set of smooth glider feet for use on carpeting. It would have been nice if there had been some explanation of these feet, either in the assembly instructions (which were not present - see above) or in the listing. It would have saved me several minutes of examining the walker to see if I had forgotten to attach something important. But not wishing to appear ungrateful, I have to add that the extra feet were an unexpected bonus.Final point - for those who may not know how high to set the legs, my orthopedist said the hand grips should be "pocket high." Hope that helps...

This works very well as it is easy to open and close

This works very well as it is easy to open and close. I had mine taken by mistake at a doctor's appointment, and a person left a piece of junk one. It was dark, so at first I didn't notice, except it didn't fold, and mine had always folded easily. Then when I got home I noticed it had a different brand on it, and I looked up my Amazon order of 2 years ago and realized I had a walker that wasn't mine.Security at UCSD was not able to find it, and it hasn't been turned in, as this occurred two weeks ago. Of course, I doubt a person would turn in a good walker to get their junky, busted one back. I had to fight and talk to many people at UCSD to agree to pay for me to reorder my same walker, along with the tennis balls. They provided me with one from their hospital that was difficult to close, and its lowest setting was too high for me, according to my PT. So, they gave me a walker designed for a tall, heavy person, and I am neither. Still hassling as I want an Amazon gift card, rather than a check, that would be another hassle to cash, after all the other hassles they caused me telling me to leave my walker behind the entrance desk, never thinking it wouldn't be there when I returned. From now on, I will make sure this goes with me as long as I need it.
