Great filter the best
This filter is so hard to find. I hope the company doesn't stop making it. Worth every penny. Lasts for years. Who wants to be changing a filter with connectors every 6 months? Not me. One and done for a few years and then switch it out. Love it. Fresh clean water and ice.

Good quality - long service but beware of pricing fluctuations and pay attention when installing.
Started using Watts filters around 2000, initially purchased through Home Depot. I install this on the water supply of an older Whirlpool side by side refrigerator ice maker/water dispenser. Believe these are the best outboard filters available and, depending upon usage, will last several years before replacement needed. One caution is be certain that you have installed correctly and that you have a leakproof seal. The instructions say to hand tighten and then use a wrench for a final half turn. That might work if you have a very strong grip but I found that I needed to crank it down around another 1 1/2 turn or so before it stopped leaking. Let me emphasize that you need to check for leaks and continue to carefully tighten until it is sealed properly. When I replaced a filter the first time, I belatedly discovered that it was still slightly leaking...too late and had water damage in an adjacent room (the water had seeped under the baseboard). Not sure what is going on with the pricing, perhaps just supply chain problems, but these were listed at over $100 this last time (early 2024) which is over 3X the amount I paid for the first one. Delayed until it came back down within reason. Current price seems to have stabilized around $40.

Filtered water tastes "refreshing"
We had two kinds of flakes in the water from our fridge: 1) Translucent flakes that floated; and 2) White flakes that sank. Thawed ice-cubes from the ice-maker had both kinds of flakes, and like the water it smelled terrible and was undrinkable.Thinking the translucent flakes may have resulted from bacterial/algal biofilms in the lines and the white flakes were mineral deposits, we changed the filter within the fridge, and ran gallons of water through the new filter. This didn't help - the translucent flakes never disappeared and the white flakes came back 2-3 days. Ice-cubes remained as bad as they were before (here too, I dumped at least 10-15 loads of ice made over 2 weeks). Finally, as a last resort before getting a new fridge, I did the following after unhooking the fridge from the main water line:a) Pump two liters of bleach through the fridge water lines (letting the bleach sit in the line for 20-30 minutes).b) Pump several liters of clean water to flush the bleach.c) Pump two liters of hydrogen peroxide through the fridge water line, letting it sit for 30 minutes.d) Pump 10-20 liters of clean water to flush the peroxide.e) Replaced the filter within the fridge. After reconnecting the main supply line, the water was clean for exactly two days before we started seeing very small white mineral flakes again. After reading the reviews here, I decided to install the Watts filter as a pre-filter.I mounted the filter behind the refrigerator; two problems encountered by other reviewers are that an additional supply-line (connecting hose) or a mounting bracket are not provided with the filter. Supply-lines are readily available - Watts' makes these lines that are available from Amazon. The bracket is more troublesome. I was going to fashion something crude using zip-ties when I found that 2.5 inch conduit hangers were the right diameter to hold the filter. I replaced the bolts/nuts on the conduit hanger with longer bolts/wingnuts to make loosening/tightening easier. All put together (supply line + conduit hangers), it cost about $12 to mount the filter. I've attached photographs to make my descriptions clearer. It has now been a month since the filter has been installed and the neither the water nor the ice from the fridge have flakes of either kind. The water tastes great and is odor-free.Its only been a month, so I cannot comment on the filters longevity, but so far its been great.Update - June 17, 2013It has been just over a year. Filter is still working very well.

Compatible with soft water.
Bought this to replace 2 filters we had, 1 going to the refrigerator for an ice maker and 1 going to a drinking water spout. Just used a tee and it filters both with no drop in pressure. Previously we had hollow ice cubes bc of a drop in pressure I suppose. We just installed a water softener, so I was searching for weeks for a filter compatible with soft water, this one is. The product description doesn't mention it and the company never responded to my emails or calls, but by doing my own research and comparing it to other filters that are compatible with soft water (and alot more expensive) I concluded that the filtering material is the same as the expensive ones and therefore would be fine to use with soft water. Also, after all of my research, I found out that my parents have this same filter, and soft water, and I love how their water tastes. That was what finally sold me on this filter.Once you flush the black particles out of the filter it will still look cloudy. Don't be alarmed, it is just air and will dissipate in about a week. Again, the company was no help in this matter. I kept dumping out my cloudy glass of water and letting it run for 10 seconds or so, waste of water. After contacting the company to no avail, I looked on here at the questions and someone answered that it was just air and it would go away in a couple weeks.I think I included all of the important info that I searched for for weeks. If I could've only read a review like this one, my research would have been minimal. The water tastes great, is crystal clear, and the ice cubes are fully formed!
