I hammered into the block. It worked fine.

Q: Can you hang floating shelves with this?

I doubt it. Most floating shelves require a cleat that is well anchored in order to hold the weight of the shelf. I don't see how this would work in that application.

Q: Can the largest of these hooks hold baseball caps or a light jacket?

They can hold way heavier things than that! They are holding very large (heavy) paintings in brick!! The smallest things can hold both a baseball cap and a jacket! They are well worth the mbey!!
