Q: whats the rate each led can be updated? (how many times per second)

Each LED requires three bytes of data for green, red, and blue - 24 bits total. As each bit is specified as being 1.25us, writing one LED requires 30us. The LEDs are accessed sequentially, so writing to 50 LEDs will take 1.50ms. The data timing may vary from one controller to another; these timing specs are from the WS2812B datasheet.

Q: Is it better with 5v or 12v wiring system?

12v is the best. Especially if you will need to run wire from your controller to your lights and if you plan to control more than 50 bulbs from one “channel” on your controller. With the 5v you will have to use power injection if you connect strands together and you can’t run very long extension cables.

Q: How do you cut these shorter? I'm wanting to cut it in half for a project I'm doing, but don't want to set anything on fire.

Simply use a wire cutters (side cutters, or whatever you want to call it). No, you won't set anything on fire, but as a good safety practice, make sure they aren't plugged in (powered) when you cut the wires. If you need to space them out, you can cut the wires and solder on longer wires between the bulbs. These are very easy to work with, and very satisfying. :-) Good luck, and please tell us about your project!

Q: How long is the string?

The distance between the leds is 4.5 inches X 50 leds = 225 inches from first to last led, plus a little extra for connecting to the power supply and the last led extra cable to connect several strings together.
