PU leather is polyurethane plastic embossed with the texture of leather. there is no leather in this product. that said, it is reasonably sturdy and I have been satisfied with it.

Q: will these damage my mechanical pencils?

I have been keeping polished vintage and modern turned pens and mechanical pencils in this case for several months and it has caused no damage. The interior is soft and the zipper doesn't reach my pens. I just looked and I can find no problems with the elastic. However, I would let any instrument fully dry after polishing or cleaning before putting it in the portfolio case, to prevent volatile polishes and cleaners from interacting with the case and your pencils. In the long term, outgassing from vintage and modern plastics, finger oils, and finishes could affect close adjacent pens and pencils in all portfolio holders, not just this one. If you are concerned about this long term damage, you can remove, rotate, and wipe your pencils regularly with a clean microfiber cloth. I hope this is helpful.

My pens, pencils, and markers stay in place nicely because of the elastic that holds them. My items do not rub against each other and are fine in this case. I don’t think you have to worry about damage to your pens.

I didn't detect any smell from the plastic covering or cloth lining.
