Substantial but Far from Perfect!
In truly Germanic fashion, this large-size book is superbly organized: the first six chapters present essays pertaining to residential floor plans, dealing for example with their evolution from 1850 to 2000; the core of the book is devoted to one- or two-page descriptions of specific projects, with floor plans at uniform scales (1:1000, 1:500, 1:200). The inside covers present graphical charts where, for easy reference, projects are organized by architectural firm and floor plan and access types. Strangely, however, there is no conclusion whatsoever. The variety and originality of the floor plans presented is striking. They include projects from the five continents and all decades since the 19th century, but most are quite recent and originate from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Some famous buildings are featured such as Lakeshore Towers in Chicago and Habitat 67 in Montreal, but their renown goes unmentioned.Oddly, basic requirements are not pointed out: the need for a window in bedrooms and living rooms; maximum distance to a window for adequate lighting; soundproofing; access to bathroom from both bedrooms and reception areas; the need for closets; minimum ceiling height; esthetic proportion of rooms, etc. More generally, the objectives underpinning the floor plans are not made explicit. From the text, originality and flexibility emerge. Judging from the buildings included, esthetics is certainly not one and comfort, privacy or ecology do not appear to be significant. User satisfaction is not mentioned and there seems to have been no attempt at getting feedback from residents, months or years after they have moved in.Some plans are downright impractical and, for example:• one locates the only bathroom for a three-storey house on the ground floor, between the street entrance and the kitchen;• another is conceived so that beds may be stored away during the day to liberate space, which would entail an awful lot of daily work;• another is for a 500 m long tiered building, straddling a highway; no reference is made to noise or carbon monoxide issues. The only photos are small and black and white. Almost all are of the buildings and but three or four in the whole book of actual interiors. There are also issues regarding translation from the original German with words like “to debouch” or “habitation” being used. Finally, the book also presents problems in terms of ergonomics and reader comfort:• it is so heavy that most will need to place it on a table to read it comfortably;• the font and the floor plans themselves are often very small and many will need a magnifying glass to grasp them properly;• the book’s ink or glue or both have an olfactory presence that some may find annoying.Overall, given the price, it appears wise even for those fascinated by the topic to carefully weigh their decision to proceed with a purchase.

大学で建築を学んでいます。様々な平面・断面プランが載っており、トレースにはもってこいかなと思います。細かい寸法や詳細図はあまりありません。
